Who we are and where we've come from
Having just finished a full-length DVD documentary with a production company, I was a free agent. I have spent the last nine months editing animated for the DVD, and the last two months traveling New Zealand. I was looking for my next adventure.
I landed on the Friday and battling jetlag I went to the office of my very first freelance client on the Monday. He needed help with two animated explainer videos for a solicitors. He showed me a video of what he had already done, to show me what he was expecting. This was the first time I was introduced to explainer video.
I had never heard of explainer videos before (I now know it is an American term) but there was something about the bold colours, the simple graphics and story arc that I fell in love with. They were a minute long and needed personality and love mixed in to create a mini video. I was hooked, and knew I was onto something.
After much discussion with a designer friend, we made an agreement. He would create the images using Illustrator, and with his existing knowledge of marketing, branding, storytelling, illustration and graphic design he created beautiful images specifically for the client. We would discuss different versions of the images while tucked up away in the shed at the bottom of his garden. It became our studio.
Every few days we would get together and plan the next video, discuss styles and branding. When the business went quiet, we would do our own projects… but when it got busy… it was too much for just the two of us.
So we asked a script writer to join us. She created beautiful, flowing, to the point scripts, that would roll off the tongue. Every illustrator has their own style, and when we got so busy, we would match the style of the clients and their vision to the illustrator - it worked.
Now we have grown to 3 of us, with a handful of incredible illustrator at hand, cherry picked locally. We create videos for businesses who want to change the world, as well as videos for other production companies on a white label basis, some companies just need animation, some need the whole package.
What is certain is that all of us believe we are the luckiest people alive, doing a job we love every day, is a privilege, and we are terrified of getting a “real” job, as we refer to it.
Everyday we get to share a little more business love - and everyday we get to make the world a little bit better.
That is where we are today.
